North Towanda, PA

North Towanda is a census-designated place in Bradford County on the southwest bank of the Susquehanna River. The 2020 census counted 1,060 residents. The CDP occupies part of North Towanda Township, with Towanda Borough and Towanda Township to the south, Burlington Township to the west, Ulster Township to the northwest, and Wysox Township across the river to the east. U.S. Routes 6 and 220 run through the township, giving the river valley a pair of north–south and east–west connections.

North Towanda’s older history reaches back to Ezra Rutty, identified as the township’s first permanent resident in 1785. A schoolhouse stood within the present township boundary by 1813, and North Towanda separated from Towanda Township in 1857. Those dates make the place easier to picture: the CDP is a named settlement inside a larger township, shaped by the river, early farm roads, and the institutions that grew along them. Towanda Borough remains the nearby civic center, while the Susquehanna supplies the broad geographic line that organizes the community.
