About North Walpole
North Walpole is a Walpole-town census-designated place of 785 residents in the 2020 census, on New Hampshire Route 12 directly across the Connecticut River from Bellows Falls, Vermont. The village has its own ZIP code, 03609, and Route 12 follows Main and Church Streets toward Charlestown and the Walpole village. The river forms the western and southern edges, with the town of Charlestown to the north. The village's riverfront also faces the Bellows Falls dam and paper-mill history across the water. Route 12 keeps the village connected to Walpole, Charlestown, and the Vermont crossing.
Spring log drives once brought timber down the Connecticut, and crews guided the logs through a sluice at Bellows Falls; North Walpole's saloons served the drivers before the runs ended after 1915. The Arch Bridge connected the two communities, and its 1905 span was once among the longest highway arch bridges in the country. Today the river, bridge crossing, and Vermont-facing streets still give North Walpole a distinct Upper Connecticut identity.
