Northern Cambria, PA

At the 2020 census, Northern Cambria had 3,560 people, but the name is newer than the community. The borough took shape on January 1, 2000, when the older boroughs of Barnesboro and Spangler merged; locals still call it “The 2.” The story underneath reaches back to the West Branch of the Susquehanna, which carried logs downstream, then to the 1890s bituminous coal boom that brought railroads and workers from Great Britain and Eastern Europe. The region’s coal history includes the 1922 Reilly Shaft No. 1 explosion, which killed 78 miners.

That history is being kept in a very hands-on way. Northern Cambria Historical Preservation collects photographs, cemetery records, Sanborn maps, newspapers, and family papers from Barnesboro, Spangler, and surrounding communities. One featured memory is Hoover’s Dairy, founded in 1926 and delivering milk for more than half a century. The borough’s school district now serves the area from one Pre-K–12 building, a very different footprint from the rail-and-mine years. Northern Cambria feels like two old towns learning to tell one shared story, with the river valley and coal hills still underneath it.
