Northway, AK

Located in Alaska's eastern interior just miles from the Canadian border, Northway is a small, quiet community spread across Northway Village, Northway Junction, and a few neighboring settlements. With around 250 residents, it offers a deeply peaceful, rural lifestyle where neighbors look out for one another and daily routines adapt to the seasons. The Alaska Highway runs right through the area, connecting locals to Tok for grocery trips, medical care, and supplies.

Community life revolves heavily around the Walter Northway School, which serves local kids from pre-K through 12th grade and hosts most local sports and family events. Having a state-maintained airport and direct highway access makes travel and freight easier than in many off-road Alaska villages, but moving here still means embracing true interior living, complete with subarctic winter freezes, short winter daylight, and a strong culture of self-reliance.
