About Northwest

Northwest is a Brunswick County city incorporated in 1993 at the northern end of the county, with US 74/76 and Interstate 140 providing its main road connections. The CSX rail line also crosses the community, so the local map is a mix of highway, rail, and old agricultural land. City Hall grew out of an early municipal setup in the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department and the Northwest Community Building before moving to its current site in 1998. Wilmington is about 13 miles east by the highway, while Whiteville lies west. Northwest is a small city whose name sounds directional, but whose identity comes from its place between Brunswick County farms, highways, and the rail line.
