Norway, IA

Norway is a Benton County city southwest of Cedar Rapids, built around the Chicago and North Western Railway. Osman Tuttle platted it in 1863, two years after the railroad arrived, and donated five acres for the line on the condition that the new town carry the name of his native Norway. The 2020 census counted 466 residents. The railroad still runs along the edge of town, and the surrounding farm roads connect Norway to the larger employment and service centers of eastern Benton County.

Baseball gives Norway a second identity. Local teams became prominent after the Civil War, and the town's school and amateur programs produced a long list of players; that history is carried today through the Iowa Baseball Museum and the Norway Tigers. Students attend Norway Intermediate and the wider Benton Community School District, whose footprint includes several Benton County communities and whose high school is in Van Horne. City Hall, the school, railroad corridor, churches, and baseball grounds sit close to the compact center, so the town's present-day routines still follow the pattern that shaped its beginnings: rail access, farm-country connections, school life, and organized sport.
