Norwood, CO

Norwood sits at about 7,000 feet on Wright’s Mesa in San Miguel County, with the La Sal Mountains, Uncompahgre Plateau, San Juan and San Miguel ranges, and Lone Cone shaping the wider view. The town’s post office dates to 1887, and the community took its name from Norwood, Missouri, the home of an early settler. Norwood’s compact center serves a broad rural mesa of ranches, open fields, and scattered homes, giving the town a role larger than its population count.

Night changes the map. Norwood received International Dark Sky Community certification in February 2019, becoming the first town on Colorado’s Western Slope to receive the designation. Local lighting rules and community outreach protect the conditions that make the stars visible from the mesa. A town parks-and-open-space plan calls for trails connecting neighborhoods, the downtown core, high school, fairgrounds, and Gurley Ditch; existing sidewalks are strongest in downtown. Residents’ routines gather around a school-and-downtown core, mesa roads, and a sky that has become part of the town’s civic work.
