The area was originally home to the Lenape before Dutch settlers arrived in the late seventeenth century, leaving behind historic sandstone homes that still stand today. The borough's name comes from its early identity as the "North Woods" of Harrington Township. Rail service in the late nineteenth century spurred Norwood's growth as a picturesque suburb, leading to its official incorporation in 1905.
