Novato has a spacious, spread-out feel compared to much of Marin County, organized around several distinct neighborhoods along Highway 101. Downtown's Sherman Avenue comes alive on Tuesday evenings from spring through fall for the weekly farmers' market, where neighbors pick up fresh produce, grab dinner from food trucks, and catch outdoor concerts on the civic lawn. Hamilton holds its own free summer concerts at the outdoor amphitheater, giving residents great options close to home on warm nights. Commuting is straightforward thanks to three separate SMART train stations, which link Novato to the Larkspur ferry for trips into San Francisco or head north toward Santa Rosa and Sonoma County wine country.

Novato has deep roots that show up across the landscape. Just north of town, Olompali State Historic Park preserves ancestral Coast Miwok village sites with a history stretching back thousands of years. On the south end, Hamilton preserves a slice of twentieth-century military aviation history. Originally built in the 1930s, the former air base has been thoughtfully converted into a neighborhood of its own, keeping its distinctive Spanish Mission Revival buildings alongside modern townhomes, community pools, sports fields, and waterfront paths along San Pablo Bay.

The local economy blends biotech innovation, professional offices, and independent neighborhood businesses. High on a hill overlooking the northern edge of the city sits the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, housed in a striking campus designed by I.M. Pei that also hosts community lectures and tours. Down closer to the bay, the old airplane hangars at Hamilton Landing have found new life as modern commercial offices, while nearby Bel Marin Keys serves as a hub for light manufacturing, artisan trades, and specialty services. Together with the local storefronts along Grant Avenue, Novato provides a solid economic base alongside its relaxed, small-town atmosphere.
