Nuiqsut, AK

Nuiqsut is a small Iñupiat village of around 600 residents tucked along the Colville River delta on Alaska's North Slope. The modern town took root in 1974 when twenty-seven families traveled overland by snowmachine and sled from Utqiaġvik to rebuild their ancestral home. Today, Nuiqsut sits near major oil developments like the Alpine field and Willow project, and the town is entirely off the highway system. Getting in and out means flying on small bush planes, driving temporary ice roads in winter, or navigating the river by boat in summer.

Everyday life here follows the seasonal flow of the Arctic. Families hunt caribou across the tundra, harvest fish from the river, and head out to the coast for fall whaling. The heart of town is the Nuiqsut Trapper School, which educates kids from preschool through twelfth grade and serves as the go-to gathering spot for community dinners and sports.
