Nulato, AK

Nulato is a traditional Koyukon Athabascan village tucked into the rolling Nulato Hills along the Yukon River, roughly 35 miles west of Galena. Long before Russian fur traders arrived in the nineteenth century, the river corridor served as a lively gathering spot where Koyukon and Iñupiat families traded and set up seasonal fish camps. The Yukon remains the heartbeat of the community. Open water runs from mid-May through October for boating and salmon fishing, while thick winter ice transforms the river into a travel highway for snowmachines.

Today, the village is split between the original riverbank settlement and a newer neighborhood built two miles up in the hills to avoid seasonal flooding. Most daily essentials are up on the ridge, including the local health clinic, tribal council offices, and the K-12 Andrew K. Demoski School. Subsistence hunting, fishing, and trapping anchor family routines alongside jobs with the school district and local government. Community ties run deep here, highlighted every other year when Nulato partners with neighboring Kaltag to host the week-long Stick Dance, a historic Koyukon memorial gathering that draws visitors from across the Interior.
