Nunica, MI

Nunica is an Ottawa County unincorporated community and census-designated place in Crockery Township, where the 2020 census counted 351 residents. The community sits near the junction of Interstate 96, M-104, and M-231, placing it within the road network between Grand Haven, Muskegon, and inland Ottawa County. The name comes from menonica, an Ottawa word associated with clay earth used for pottery, and Ottawa communities inhabited the area for centuries.

Crockery Creek's post office opened in 1848, when Hathaway became the first postmaster, giving the settlement an early link to mail, trade, and the surrounding township. Crockery Township's first school district followed in 1849. Today the highway junction carries traffic around the community, while local roads lead to farms, homes, and nearby river and lake communities. Nunica's place in Ottawa County comes from the meeting of old and new routes: an Indigenous name, a nineteenth-century post office, and modern expressways crossing the same township landscape. The road numbers make the location easy to find, while the older name carries the deeper history.
