Oak City, NC

Oak City is a small, relaxed community set among the farmland of northwestern Martin County. It got its start in the late 1800s as a rural trading post originally called Goose Nest. The town picked up its modern name in 1905, thanks to a resident who visited Raleigh, spotted “Oak City Laundry” painted across a delivery wagon, and liked the name enough to bring it back home.

Life here moves at a quiet, unhurried pace, surrounded by open fields and scenic country roads. The town gives residents plenty of space and rural privacy while still offering an easy drive into neighboring hubs like Williamston. Between community gatherings at St. Mark’s Missionary Baptist Church and local history displays at Town Hall, Oak City retains a warm, down-to-earth character.
