Oak Creek, WI

Two of Oak Creek's central public spaces occupy land once devoted to industry. The town began in 1840 with only 40 families; access to Lake Michigan and the railroad, followed by industrial growth, brought more settlement. Its transition from town to city required an unusual political fight. After Milwaukee sought to annex the community, local leaders secured a change in state law and held an incorporation referendum in 1955. The vote was 2,107 to 126, and Wisconsin signed Oak Creek's city charter that December. Drexel Town Square now concentrates several everyday civic functions on the former Delphi manufacturing site. A joint City Hall and public library opened there in 2015, facing a square with a splash pad.

The city's 2026 calendar placed a Saturday farmers market there from May through October, along with food-truck evenings, outdoor films, concerts, children's programs, and night markets. Lake Vista Park represents a second industrial-site conversion on the Lake Michigan shore. Its community-designed grounds include a pavilion, playground, recreation field, covered bluff overlooks, and an accessible trail to lake views. Nearby Bender Park, operated by Milwaukee County, adds a sand beach and places for fishing, birding, hiking, and launching boats. Oak Creek's community activity therefore has two distinct centers: municipal services and recurring events around the town square, and recreation along a lakefront that was inaccessible during much of the area's industrial era.
