Oak Hill, OH

Oak Hill is a Jackson County village with deep Welsh roots. Welsh immigrants from Cardiganshire began arriving in the Gallia and Jackson County area in 1818, with larger numbers during the 1830s and 1840s. The village formed in 1873, and the 2020 census counted 1,407 residents. That history remains visible in the Welsh-American Heritage Museum, housed in the former Welsh Congregational Church built in 1868.

The museum’s collection includes Welsh books, Bibles, church records, photographs, and other objects, and its calendar now includes open hours, appointments, volunteers, and exhibit work. Central Memorial Park adds a newer landmark: the World’s Largest Acorn was erected there in June 2025. Oak Hill’s town routine also runs through village offices, the local police department, the Oak Hill Union Local School District, parks, and Jackson County roads. The school district’s daily schedule adds another local meeting point. Welsh heritage is part of the present-day map, alongside the school calendar, village services, and the oversized acorn.
