Oak Park, CA

Open space, rather than a municipal downtown, frames Oak Park's public landscape. The unincorporated Ventura County community sits in the Simi Hills, with Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area to the north and east and Rancho Simi open space to the south; 13,898 people lived there in 2020. The surrounding landscape holds Chumash village, camp, and rock-shelter sites that predate European contact by thousands of years. Modern development began in the late 1960s with a single access road from Agoura Hills. Residents later chose to remain unincorporated instead of forming a city or joining Thousand Oaks. Public facilities are shared among county, park-district, and school systems. Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District maps Oak Canyon Community Park with an amphitheater, splash pad, playground, pavilions, trails, and connections to the Oak Park Dog Park; it also operates Oak Park Community Center and other neighborhood parks and open spaces.

The community library grew from a bookmobile stop into a joint school-and-county library approved in 1980 and now located beside Oak Park High School. Its current building provides a 40-seat film and lecture room and a conference room. The 2026 calendar includes storytimes, play sessions, English-conversation groups, science activities, and family building programs, making the library a regular gathering place as well as a shared-use institution.
