About Oak Run
Oak Run is a small Shasta County CDP about 23 miles east of Redding, in foothill country where oak, pine, and creek valleys meet. Its best-known industrial landmark is Phillips Brothers Mill, a steam-powered sawmill first built in 1898 and moved to its present site in 1933. The mill supplied lumber for homes, churches, schools, and bridges, and its machinery still gives Oak Run a direct line to northern California's timber years. Oak Run's history also includes an 1864 massacre of Yana people, part of the violence that accompanied settler expansion. It is a place with a working mill story and a much harder history underneath it.
