About Oakdale

Oakdale began where two railroads met, and its former Southern Pacific waiting room now holds branding irons, saddles, and rodeo memorabilia. The town formed in 1871 at the junction of the Stockton and Visalia Railroad and the line to Copperopolis. It occupies the eastern San Joaquin Valley beside the Stanislaus River, where State Routes 108 and 120 meet on the way toward the Sierra foothills. The river remains a place for fishing and water sports. At the Cowboy Museum, a rodeo gallery presents the sport through photographs, trophy buckles, chaps, and saddles, while a ranching gallery uses the depot's surviving benches and displays branding irons and barbed wire. A second institution, the Oakdale Museum and History Center, occupies the 1869 Sydnor-Prowse House, the oldest surviving home in town, and maintains local artifacts and family-history research.

Ranching traditions also appear on the annual calendar. The Oakdale Saddle Club's professional rodeo returns on the second weekend of April, with a downtown parade among the associated events, and the Chocolate Festival follows on the third weekend of May. City recreation adds a different set of routines. In 2026, the municipal pool scheduled open swimming, swim lessons, and water aerobics from late May through summer; Fish and Greger parks hosted tennis and pickleball instruction in spring, summer, and fall. The Gladys Lemmons Senior Community Center provides weekday meals, exercise, classes, movies, and volunteer activities for residents age 55 and older. At the county library branch on South First Avenue, public computers, Chromebooks, Wi-Fi, mobile printing, scanning, and a reservable community room support everyday study and meetings.
