Oakland, IL

Oakland is a city in Coles County, Illinois, near Walnut Point State Park. The community began as Independence, was platted in 1833, and took the name Oakland as the young settlement developed. Hiram Rutherford, a pioneer doctor and abolitionist, moved here in 1840 to build his medical practice. His local story is tied to one of the county's best-known legal episodes: Rutherford was involved in the 1847 Matson Trial, a case that also brought Abraham Lincoln into the area.

Walnut Point gives Oakland an outdoor reference point just beyond the city, while the town's streets and school system keep daily life centered closer to home. Oakland Community Unit School District 5 serves local families and ties the city to nearby rural communities across eastern Coles County. The result is a small place with two distinct historical lines: the early settlement story in its original town plat and the larger Illinois history that passed through Rutherford and the Matson case. For visitors, the park is the obvious nearby destination; for residents, Oakland is still a school, road, and neighborhood community in the middle of farm country.
