Oakland, OR

Oakland is a Douglas County city on Calapooya Creek, two miles from Interstate 5 and within the Umpqua River watershed. The 2020 census counted 934 residents. The town began in 1852 on a bluff above the creek, then moved in 1871–72 toward the Oregon and California Railroad. That move left Oakland with a compact old center shaped by brick storefronts, railroad-era streets, and the creek below. The two-block business district is the heart of the Oakland Historic District, with original brick buildings from the 1880s and 1890s.

Oakland was the first Oregon city placed on the state's historic register, and the town still leans into that built-in sense of place without becoming a museum piece. Calapooya Creek brings the water, the Umpqua valley brings the surrounding farm and timber country, and I-5 keeps Roseburg and the rest of Douglas County close by.
