Oakley, ID

Oakley is a Cassia County city at the southern edge of the Snake River Plain, between Goose Creek and the Middle and Albion Mountains. The town’s old streets are part of the story: its Oakley Historic District includes more than a hundred stone and brick buildings, many of them over a century old. Oakley Academy opened in 1901, Howells Opera House in 1907, and the Oakley Valley Museum now gathers the area’s school, business, farming, military, and household history under one roof.

Summer in Oakley is organized around Pioneer Days, a celebration of western settlement that has been running since 1882. The Oakley Vigilantes riding group helped turn the event toward rodeo, and today the calendar mixes the parade with a farmers market, races, food, music, and fireworks. Goose Creek, the surrounding ranch and farm country, and nearby City of Rocks keep the setting outdoorsy, but Oakley’s real character is in the built details: stone storefronts, Victorian homes, the opera house, and a town museum that knows where everything came from.
