Ocklawaha, FL

Ocklawaha is a Marion County community on the north shore of Lake Weir, where the name of the Ocklawaha River meets a 2020 census count of 1,508. A post office has served the place since 1884, but the water and road network shape the map more than the boundary does. Lake Weir, the Ocklawaha River basin, and the Ocala regional orbit make this an unincorporated place tied to larger county systems.

Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area gives the local history a physical address. Citrus groves once surrounded the lake, and fruit left a packinghouse on the island’s east shore by steamboat for the railroad; old dock pilings remain. County parks also include Ocklawaha Community Park and nearby boat ramps. The Oklawaha River Aquatic Preserve protects a river corridor with archaeological sites dating to the Early Archaic period and ongoing water-quality and invasive-species work. Ocklawaha’s present map is lake access, county services, and a working landscape whose citrus and river history still sit under the recreation roads.
