Odell, IL

Odell is a Livingston County village with two transportation lives. Sydney S. Gardner laid it out in 1856 beside the Chicago and Alton Railroad, and the early settlement quickly became a grain collection point for one of central Illinois’s richest farming regions. A grain elevator, school, hotel, and small stores followed, while shipments from the surrounding farms moved out by rail. By the late 1870s, more than a million and a half bushels of grain were being shipped from Odell, a remarkable volume for a village of its size.

Then came the highway era. Historic U.S. Route 66 passes through the northwest side of Odell, preserving the link between the old railroad town and the motorists who crossed Illinois on the Mother Road. The restored Standard Oil station is the village’s best-known roadside landmark, and local tourism now leans into that connection. The 2020 census counted 1,003 residents. Odell’s identity is built from movement: grain elevators and railcars first, Route 66 travelers later, with the flat farm country still stretching around both stories.
