Odem, TX

At the meeting of two rail lines, Odem sits twenty miles from Corpus Christi in southwestern San Patricio County. The town was laid out in 1909 by John James Welder and David Odem after the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway reached the county; the post office opened that year, and the place took its name from the county sheriff. Odem grew as ranchland became farms and nearby settlements such as Meansville, Angelita, Kaleta, and Sharpsburg folded into its trading orbit. Early shipments included radishes, onions, cabbage, carrots, beets, and spinach, with a Pioneer Cannery handling Del Mar vegetables in the 1930s.

That agricultural story later shifted toward cotton, corn, grain sorghum, oil, and grain handling. Highway 77 now puts Odem on the line between Corpus Christi and Houston, while nearby industrial work draws commuters from town. For day-to-day errands, the city maintains a library, parks and recreation, fire and EMS services, streets, water, and utility billing. The local calendar adds an Odem Jubilee with a barbecue cookoff, Easter in the Park, and Christmas in the Park, so the rail-and-farm town still has a few dependable dates when everyone knows where to be.
