Odessa, DE

Odessa is a New Castle County town on the Appoquinimink Creek, built around a crossing that connected river traffic, roads, and the farms of southern New Castle County. The place began as Cantwell's Landing and Cantwell's Bridge; in 1731, Richard Cantwell received permission to build a toll bridge over the creek. Tanning, banking, shipping, and later rail connections followed. The town adopted the name Odessa in the nineteenth century, after the Ukrainian port, as transportation patterns shifted away from the old river trade.

The historic district is the reason Odessa feels so intact today. Main Street, the Appoquinimink Meeting House, historic houses, and museum properties preserve the small port-and-market-town outline, while the Historic Odessa Foundation gives visitors a way into the buildings and their stories. Odessa sits inside the Appoquinimink School District, with Odessa High School nearby, and Middletown supplies much of the surrounding commercial pull. The creek still sets the town's geography, even with modern roads carrying most trips. Odessa is a compact Delaware town where a toll bridge, a tannery, a river landing, and a carefully kept street grid all remain visible at once.
