Odin, IL

Odin is a Marion County village of 935 people in the 2020 census, set along US 50 between Salem and Sandoval. Scandinavian settlers gave the village its early character, and the name comes from Odin, a god in Germanic mythology. The Illinois Central Railroad and the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad crossed near town, turning Odin into a rail-connected village 65 miles east of St. Louis. It incorporated as a town in 1865 and adopted village organization in 1874.

Education has always reached beyond the village streets. Odin's early rural area had six one-room schools, and students later moved through Odin Elementary, Odin Community High School, or neighboring schools according to district boundaries. Odin Public School District 722 still operates locally. The village's older commercial map included a brick and tile factory, library, churches, clubs, and US 50; today Salem, six miles east, remains the county seat and the nearest larger reference point. Odin is a rail-era village whose Scandinavian name and school network remain visible on the Marion County map.
