Offutt AFB, NE

Offutt AFB is a census-designated place in eastern Nebraska, just south of Omaha in Sarpy County, built around the military installation whose roots reach back to Fort Crook. The airfield began in 1918 as a balloon and aviation field, was named Offutt Field in 1924 for Lt. Jarvis Offutt, and then took on a much bigger industrial role when the Glenn L. Martin Company built a bomber plant there during World War II. The factory produced B-26s and B-29s, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar. In 1948 the installation became Offutt Air Force Base, and Strategic Air Command moved its headquarters there that same year.

Today the place is closely tied to the 55th Wing, strategic command-and-control work, reconnaissance aircraft, and the Omaha-area military community. The Missouri River sits just east, and the base’s roads and runways create a distinct enclave within the wider suburban landscape. The 2019 flood, which covered a large portion of the installation and runway area, became another chapter in its long history. The local scoop is that Offutt is more than a base name on a map: it is a census place with a balloon-field beginning, a bomber-plant middle, and an active mission that still shapes Sarpy County.
