Ohkay Owingeh, NM

Ohkay Owingeh is a historic Tewa pueblo located where the Rio Grande meets the Chama River in northern New Mexico. Known for centuries as San Juan Pueblo before reclaiming its traditional name, the community has deep roots in farming, pottery, and rich cultural traditions. Today, it operates as a self-governing tribal nation while offering essential local services, including family wellness centers, youth programs, and community planning.

At the heart of the pueblo lies Owe'neh Bupingeh, a historic village defined by traditional adobe homes, ceremonial kivas, and four central plazas. This core area remains an active, lived-in neighborhood where families maintain multi-generational houses and gather for seasonal dances and annual feast days. Cottonwood groves, irrigated pastures, and quiet rural lanes surround the village, preserving the area's agricultural character along the riverbanks.
