Okahumpka, FL

Okahumpka is an unincorporated Lake County community west of Leesburg, on the old east-west route that became County Road 470. Its most recognizable building is the Campbell House, an 1880s frame house also known as the Valentine House and listed on the National Register. The railroad gave the community a second shape: Florida Southern Railroad arrived in 1884, a depot went up near today’s Highway 33 and 470, and land around it was platted in the 1880s. Riverboat traffic had been the earlier way to move goods; rail shipping eventually took over.

Okahumpka still has the kind of local institutions that make an unincorporated place legible. Three churches helped buy the old Okahumpka Rosenwald School from the Lake County School District, and the building became the community club. The Campbell House, the old school, the crossroads, and the nearby route to US 27 give the place more texture than its CDP label suggests. The local scoop is an old Florida settlement where trails, depot land, a historic house, and a community-held school all sit in the same small pocket of western Lake County.
