Okeene, OK

Okeene is a Blaine County town at the meeting of State Highways 8 and 51 in northwestern Oklahoma. A townsite company established it in 1892 during the Cheyenne-Arapaho land opening, and T.H. Mansfield formed the name from the last syllables of Cherokee and Cheyenne. Farming, cattle, and agricultural industries shaped the town as it grew, with German-descended farm families adding another layer to the local story.

Okeene Public School grew from a one-room school opened in 1901 and now serves students through high school. The highway junction sends trips south to Watonga and northwest to Fairview, while local streets connect grain, pasture, homes, churches, and businesses. The town's grain elevators, ball fields, and storefronts make the junction feel tied to the surrounding farms. Town events and school activities keep the county-seat road network moving through the center. Okeene is an Oklahoma prairie town whose name carries the memory of the land opening and whose present-day life still runs through school, agriculture, and two state highways.
