Okemos, MI

The Red Cedar River links Okemos's name story to its present park system. Anishinaabeg used the river corridor for travel, hunting, and fishing before American settlement; a village platted as Hamilton was renamed Okemos in 1859 for the leader also known as Ogemaa. Okemos is now a Census-designated place rather than an incorporated city, so Meridian Charter Township operates many of the public spaces and programs carrying an Okemos address. The 2020 census counted 25,121 residents. Estimates for 2020 through 2024 found that 22 percent of residents were foreign-born and 27 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Owner occupancy was 59 percent, the median owner-occupied value was $359,200, monthly costs for owners with a mortgage were $2,261, and median gross rent was $1,298. Median household income was $102,612, and workers averaged about 19 minutes of travel to work.

Marketplace on the Green gives Okemos a year-round food and craft market. In 2026, 60 to 70 vendors used its outdoor pavilion on Saturdays from May through November, with a Wednesday market from June through October; winter sessions moved inside Meridian Mall, and the market accepted several food-assistance programs. Free Wednesday concerts overlapped the summer market. The broader township system includes more than 900 acres of parks, another 900 acres of preserves, and nearly 20 miles of trails. Ferguson Park and Harris Nature Center provide Red Cedar access for paddling, fishing, walking, and wildlife viewing. CATA's Routes 1, 22, and 23 connect the area with downtown Lansing, Michigan State University, and East Lansing, while reservation-based Meridian Redi-Ride handles trips within the township and transfers to those fixed routes.
