Okoboji, IA

Okoboji is a Dickinson County city built around the narrow land between West Okoboji and East Okoboji lakes. The bridge across the channel, built in 1860, helped turn the lakeshore crossing into a settled place; churches, mills, a bank, and other businesses followed during the late 19th century. The city incorporated in 1922, and the lake names themselves carry older layers of regional history, including Dakota and French usage.

The present-day city keeps that water-first layout. Six miles of lakeshore, a city beach, two parks, a marina, and Highway 71 shape the map, while the wider Iowa Great Lakes bring in seasonal visitors and connect Okoboji to Arnolds Park, Spirit Lake, and nearby West Okoboji. Okoboji Community Schools serve the surrounding area, and the city's day-to-day work includes water service, waste collection, parks, and lake-related stewardship. It is a place where the shoreline is not scenery at the edge of town; it is the organizing line through the middle of it.
