About Olanta

Olanta sits in western Florence County along US 301, known locally as Jones Road through town. Florence is about twenty-four miles northeast, Manning about twenty-three miles southwest, and the roads between them pass through the agricultural landscape of the Pee Dee. The town’s 2020 population was 550, but its reach is larger on library days, school runs, and county trips.

Olanta’s charter was signed on June 1, 1908, when the community was still near the edge of the older Lake City area and the county lines were shifting around it. Today the Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library, a Florence County Library branch, gives the town a small civic room of its own, with children’s programs, seminars, and genealogy material. Seasonal events such as the Gator Festival and Thursday night concerts keep the town calendar moving. Olanta is built around a simple Pee Dee pattern: a main road, farmland in every direction, and a compact center where the library and town offices keep local routines connected.
