About Old Harbor

Old Harbor is a city in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska, with a population of approximately 216 at the 2020 census. The community has its origins in the era of Russian exploration; in 1784 Russian fur traders massacred hundreds of Qik'rtarmiut Sugpiat people at nearby Refuge Rock, an event that marked the violent beginning of colonial occupation of Kodiak Island. The Alutiiq Tribe of Old Harbor, a federally recognized Alaska Native tribe, is headquartered in the community. The Old Harbor School serves students in grades K–12 through the Kodiak Island Borough School District.
