Omega, GA

Omega is a city of 1,318 people in 2020, spread across Tift and Colquitt counties in south Georgia. The place began as Surrey in 1889, when the Union Lumber Company built a railroad from Tifton toward Thomasville and laid out a town about ten miles southwest of Tifton. The name changed to Omega, and the railroad gave the new settlement a route for timber, farm goods, and passengers.

Because the city crosses a county line, its schools follow the boundary: residents in Tift County attend Tift County schools, while those in Colquitt County attend Colquitt County schools. That line is part of the everyday map, along with the old railroad corridor, farm roads, and the businesses gathered near the town center. Local churches and civic groups add another layer to town life. Omega is a small south Georgia city whose name marks the end of an early railroad town list, while its two-county footprint keeps local government and education slightly more complicated than the street grid suggests.
