Omena, MI

Tucked along the quiet shores of Omena Bay on the Leelanau Peninsula, Omena is a peaceful village with deep roots. The community started in the 1850s as a mission settlement established by Chief Ahgosa and Reverend Peter Dougherty, quickly growing around its sheltered deep-water harbor, fertile rolling hills, and local church. That easy connection to the water and surrounding farmland has defined the area ever since, giving this small coastal enclave a relaxed, timeless atmosphere.

For generations, life in Omena revolved around the water. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, passenger steamships and a local rail line carried summer travelers, fresh fruit, and supplies directly to the village docks. Much of that early character is preserved in the designated historic district today. Walking down M-22, you will see the classic 1858 white-frame Presbyterian Church, century-old storefronts, weathered cottages, and old dock pilings that tell the story of a historic Great Lakes resort haven.

Today, Omena offers a quiet, rural lifestyle surrounded by cherry orchards, rolling vineyards, and sparkling blue water. Local staples like the Omena Bay Country Store and waterfront tasting rooms at Leelanau Cellars keep the village center active throughout the warmer months. Living here means enjoying peaceful mornings on the bay while staying well-connected. Northport sits just five miles to the north for everyday essentials, and Traverse City is about a 25-minute scenic drive south when you need regional healthcare, shopping, or an airport.
