Omer, MI

Sitting along the banks of the Rifle River, Omer holds a unique claim to fame as Michigan's smallest city. It started out in the 1860s as a quiet sawmill settlement known as Rifle River Mills. When the town's founder later applied for a local post office, he originally intended to name it Homer. A paperwork mix-up dropped the first letter, and the quirky name Omer ended up sticking for good.

Today, everyday life in Omer still revolves around the water. The river draws plenty of paddlers and anglers throughout the year, especially during the annual spring sucker-fishing tournament that brings the whole community together. With its peaceful rural pace, scenic riverside spots, and close-knit feel, it offers a distinctly quiet corner of Arenac County to call home.
