Onaga, KS

Onaga is a Pottawatomie County city that began with the railroad in 1877. The town was platted by the Kansas Central Railroad, and its name came from Onago, a Potawatomi personal name supplied by railroad president Paul E. Havens. A post office opened that December, and Onaga incorporated as a city by 1881 before reincorporating in 1926. The old rail origin still gives the community its basic shape, with farm roads and the Kansas prairie opening around a compact town center.

Onaga's history is kept in especially tangible form at the Onaga Historical Society and Museum. Its displays are spread across three buildings and include a Union Pacific caboose, railroad crossing signals, and a one-room schoolhouse. Those objects connect the city's first transportation network with the school districts and farm families that followed. Onaga USD 322 serves local students, while the museum gives visitors a quick way to see how rail service, rural education, and county roads fit together. Onaga is a small Kansas city, but its name carries a Potawatomi thread and its museum still puts the railroad right in the middle of town.
