Onancock, VA

Onancock is an Accomack County town of 1,169 residents in the 2020 census, on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Its whole layout makes more sense once you remember it began as a port: Market Street and the waterfront sit close together, and the historic district runs from small mercantile buildings to Federal-era houses such as Ker Place. A 1900 fire reshaped much of the commercial area, so the older town is a blend of surviving waterfront buildings and post-fire streetscapes rather than one frozen-in-time block. The water is still the best way to read Onancock.

The Town Wharf and marina connect to Onancock Creek, with canoe and kayak access, a 14-mile creek loop, and the Tangier Island ferry. Back on land, the Historic Onancock School gives the town another communal place with paths and recreation, while the Eastern Shore Watermen's Museum keeps the working-water story close at hand. The local scoop is that Onancock is both a historic port and a practical Eastern Shore service town: you can walk from old houses and shops to a working wharf, then head out by boat toward Tangier.
