About Oneida

Oneida grew from a Nemaha County farmhouse post office into a railroad town. The post office began as Lappin in 1872 and took the name Oneida in 1876; Colonel Cyrus Shinn bought about 400 acres, platted the town, and promoted it along the St. Joseph & Western Railroad. Its streets followed the plan of Chicago’s main thoroughfares, and early businesses included a cheese factory, grain elevator, newspaper, school, and churches. Oneida’s city hall, community building, park, and remaining historic school and church sites still sit within the small-town grid, with Nemaha Central USD 115 serving the area.
