Oppelo, AR

Oppelo sits in the Arkansas River Valley three miles south of the river and six miles south of Morrilton, where Highway 9 meets the route toward Petit Jean Mountain. The community’s modern reputation grew from that road junction. Travelers headed to Petit Jean know Oppelo as the turn-off and, for many years, the last gas stop before the mountain roads. The state took over the park roads in 1933, helping make the route through Oppelo a permanent part of central Arkansas travel. The town’s setting is a mix of river-bottom agriculture, low ridges, and highway commerce.

Daily life still works at the scale of a small Conway County city, with local businesses and services serving residents as well as people moving between Morrilton, the Arkansas River, and Petit Jean. Highway 9 gives Oppelo an outward-facing role, while the town’s position in the valley keeps farming and river weather close to the routine. The road to the mountain is the obvious first introduction, but Oppelo has its own geography: a community below the escarpment, close enough to Morrilton for county needs and close enough to the river for the valley’s older working patterns.
