Oquawka, IL

Oquawka is Henderson County's seat, an Illinois village where the 2020 census counted 1,134 residents. It lies on the Mississippi River's broad Illinois bank, part of the Burlington micropolitan area. The place's name comes from the Sauk and Meskwaki word Oquawkiek, often translated as Yellow Banks, a reference to the river landing and the banks along it. The village was laid out in 1836, and Henderson County has kept its county offices here since the county was organized in 1841.

The river gives Oquawka its working geography: boats, floods, fishing, wooded bottomland, and roads all meet at the edge of town. The riverfront remains the detail visitors and residents use first when describing the village. Big River State Forest and the Oquawka State Wildlife Refuge extend the county's outdoor map, while the courthouse and village streets keep the civic center close to the water. Oquawka's older stories reach back to the Sauk and Meskwaki presence, early river traffic, and the county-seat decision that fixed the village's role in western Illinois.
