Oran, MO

Oran grew out of a cluster of names in Scott County. The place was first St. Cloud, later Sylvania, and the name Oran was adopted in the nineteenth century; its post office has used Oran since 1882. The Baptist congregation began in 1872 as Little River Church, a reminder that waterways and rural churches were part of the early map. The town's position in southeast Missouri ties it to the lowland farm country around Scott County and to larger shopping and work centers along the highways.

Tilles Memorial City Park gives Oran a town gathering ground; its 2019 sesquicentennial included music, food, games, rides, and a walking tour of older buildings. Three Rivers College, based in Poplar Bluff, is part of the region's education network, while local schools, churches, small businesses, and farm roads keep daily life close to town. Oran's story is a good one of a place that kept changing names until one stuck, then built its present around shared events and the surrounding county.
