Orcutt, CA

Orcutt’s name links an oil settlement in the Santa Maria Valley with one of California’s best-known fossil sites. The community formed beside a Pacific Coast Railway siding as Union Oil developed the surrounding field, and the railroad named the stop for company geologist William Warren Orcutt. In 1901, he recognized and collected fossil bones from the asphalt deposits at Rancho La Brea, work that helped draw scientific attention to the site now interpreted at the La Brea Tar Pits. Oil crews and rail service supplied Orcutt’s original reason for being; Clark Avenue and Broadway became its commercial streets. That industrial history remains legible in Old Town’s name and street pattern, even though the larger community extends well beyond the early business blocks.

Orcutt is an unincorporated census-designated place, and Santa Barbara County handles its land-use and public-space decisions. The county’s 1997 community plan set out to revive Old Town as a shopping district and community center while directing new development elsewhere. Subsequent changes reduced Clark Avenue from four travel lanes to two, added angled parking, and established a pedestrian-area overlay along portions of Clark and Broadway. Today those streets hold restaurants, shops, tasting rooms, and service businesses in a compact grid. Residential subdivisions spread outward from that core and merge into the broader Santa Maria Valley street network. Old Town remains the recognizable commercial center; local authority stays with Santa Barbara County.

Beyond Old Town, county-managed land preserves two different pieces of the Santa Maria Valley landscape. Orcutt Hills Open Space encompasses 306 acres of oak country and undeveloped slopes near established neighborhoods. The 26-acre Orcutt Community Park follows a riparian corridor through an oak-lined canyon. Paths and open ground at the two sites give residents direct access to oak hills and the creek corridor. They also protect the oak woodland, drainage courses, and wet areas that repeatedly appear in county planning for Orcutt. The community’s practical geography has three parts: a small historic business core, residential subdivisions extending into the valley, and county open space holding upland and creekside land near those residential streets.

Old Town’s event calendar puts that core to work. The Old Town Orcutt Revitalization Association organizes a summer market with produce, artisan foods, crafts, and live music; its 2026 schedule placed markets on the third Wednesday from May through October. The association also lists the community Christmas parade among Orcutt’s recurring traditions. Painted cow sculptures began appearing around Old Town in 2017, adding a playful reference to the valley’s agricultural past. These gatherings and public artworks use the same Clark Avenue area that county plans have treated as the community center since 1997. On ordinary days, the district supplies dining, errands, and small-business storefronts. On market evenings and parade day, those few blocks become Orcutt’s most visible common meeting ground, while the oak hills and riparian park remain close parts of the same unincorporated community.
