Ordway, CO

Ordway is a statutory town and the county seat of Crowley County on southeastern Colorado's high plains. The 2020 census counted 1,066 residents. County offices sit in town, and the Crowley County RE-1J School District provides K-12 education from its Ordway facilities. Town government handles the unglamorous pieces that keep a county seat running: utilities, streets, public safety, planning, and community services. Colorado Highway 96 runs along the southern edge, with Highway 71 on the east side, linking Ordway to Rocky Ford, Pueblo, and the wider Arkansas River Valley. The surrounding work map is agricultural, with county government and education adding steady local jobs.

Ordway's post office dates to 1890, and the Missouri Pacific Railroad reached the community a few years earlier, helping establish it as a town and service point. Today the old rail-and-highway pattern is still visible in the town's layout. Lake Henry and Lake Meredith are a short drive east, where locals fish, boat, camp, and picnic. That combination gives Ordway its shape: a practical government town surrounded by irrigated fields and open plains, with recreation close enough to be part of the county's regular weekend circuit.
