Oriskany, NY

Oriskany is an Oneida County village in Whitestown, named from an Iroquois word for nettles. The name reaches back to the Oneida village of Oriska, established before 1766 where Oriskany Creek meets the Mohawk River. That same confluence still sits near the village, with NY-69 running through and the Erie Canal just south. Oriskany also carries Revolutionary War history: on August 5, 1777, the village was visited by the Tryon County militia led by Nicholas Herkimer. It is a New York village where a river meeting, an old Indigenous name, and a wartime road all remain part of the map.
