Orland, IN

Tucked into the northwest corner of Steuben County at the intersection of State Roads 120 and 327, Orland is a quiet community with deep roots. Established in 1834 by pioneers from New England, it holds the title of the county's oldest settlement, originally known as Vermont Settlement. That heritage is still a big part of the local identity. Every July, neighbors gather for the annual Vermont Settlement Festival, which brings the town together for food, craft vendors, and a celebration of local history.

Just north of town, the Fawn River State Fish Hatchery is one of Orland's favorite outdoor spots. Built in the 1930s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 43-acre property features peaceful ponds that raise walleye and muskie, with grounds open daily from sunrise to sunset for walking and enjoying nature. Between the hatchery, the cozy Joyce Public Library, and a welcoming neighborhood feel, Orland offers a relaxed rural pace with plenty of charm.
