Orleans, VT

Orleans is a village at the northwestern corner of the Town of Barton in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, where the Barton and Willoughby rivers meet and the Willoughby River Falls drops through a short series of cascades and a chute. Roger Enos purchased land here in 1820, using a Revolutionary War land grant, and the village later developed around water, roads, and the river junction. The setting is compact, but the waterways make the geography easy to read.

The village’s everyday institutions extend that old center into the present. Jones Memorial Library provides books, programs, and meeting space, while Orleans Elementary and Lake Region Union High School connect local students to the wider Orleans Central school network. The river remains part of the town’s practical life, from the falls at the village edge to the pumping and hydro history described in local records. Orleans has the feel of a small service village in a larger rural county: school, library, churches, and shops gather around the water, with Lake Willoughby and the Barton River country nearby for the next turn in the road.
