About Orono
Orono is a historic town in Penobscot County, Maine, situated along the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers. First settled by English colonists in 1774 and named in honor of Penobscot Sachem Chief Joseph Orono, the community of approximately 11,200 developed as a prominent nineteenth-century lumber center. Today, the town is best known as the home of the University of Maine, the state's flagship public university campus.
