Orrick, MO

Orrick is a Ray County town in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with 753 residents at the 2020 census. It grew from a settlement first called Albany, established by Ely Carter in 1854. When Carter applied for a post office, the name was rejected because Missouri already had another Albany, and the community took the name Orrick instead. That naming problem is the town’s best early clue: a small place shaped by the practical rules of post offices, county roads, and a changing regional map.

Today, Orrick R-XI School District provides the town’s clearest institutional center, and the Orrick Bearcats carry a notable football record with Missouri state championships in 1975, 2007, and 2008. Kansas City is the larger regional reference point, while Ray County farm country supplies the local setting. Orrick is easier to picture as a small town with a school-centered civic rhythm and a name that emerged from a postal complication, set within the countryside east of the metro.
